DPI and sensitivity are one number, not two
Your true turn speed is DPI multiplied by in-game sensitivity. A high DPI with low sensitivity and a low DPI with high sensitivity can feel identical, so chasing a magic DPI value on its own is pointless.
The reason low DPI is popular is not that it is inherently more accurate at the same effective speed. It is that lower DPI is less sensitive to sensor jitter and lets you use a higher, more comfortable in-game slider, which many players find easier to fine tune. Most competitive Rust players sit somewhere in the 400 to 800 DPI range.
Pick a DPI once, then do all your tuning with the in-game sensitivity slider. Changing DPI later resets your muscle memory, so treat it as a fixed foundation.
cm/360: the number that actually matters
cm/360 is how many centimetres you have to move the mouse to spin a full 360 degrees. It combines DPI and sensitivity into one honest figure, and it is the value worth thinking in because it maps directly to how much desk space a turn costs you.
Lower cm/360 (a small number) means fast, flicky, less desk space. Higher cm/360 means slower and more precise but needs a bigger arm sweep. Most FPS aimers live somewhere between roughly 20 and 45 cm/360, and plenty of strong Rust players land in the 25 to 40 range.
To measure yours without maths: put a mark on your mousepad, place the mouse there, do a slow controlled 360 in game, and see how far the mouse travelled. Adjust the in-game slider until a full turn fits comfortably inside your pad with room to spare.
ADS, scope and hipfire sensitivity
Rust lets you scale aim-down-sights sensitivity relative to your hipfire sensitivity. A multiplier near 1.0 keeps the same physical hand-to-turn relationship whether you are hipfiring or aiming, which is the simplest thing to build muscle memory around.
Some players drop ADS sensitivity slightly below 1.0 for steadier long-range tap shots, especially with scopes, since a scope zooms the view and makes any hand movement feel amplified. If you try that, change it in small steps and give it time before judging.
Scoped weapons are the main case for a lower multiplier because of the zoom. For general play, matched hipfire and ADS is the safe default and the easiest to stay consistent with.

Polling rate, FOV and the rest of the setup
Set your mouse polling rate to 1000Hz. It is the standard for modern mice and gives smooth, low-latency movement reporting. Higher advertised rates exist on some hardware, but 1000Hz is a perfectly competitive baseline and not the thing holding your aim back.
Rust caps field of view at 90, and most players use the maximum for peripheral awareness. A wider FOV shows more of the fight at the cost of making distant targets appear a little smaller, which is a trade nearly everyone takes.
Turn off mouse acceleration and any smoothing in Windows and your mouse software so that the same hand movement always produces the same turn. Consistency is the whole point: a repeatable input is what lets your brain learn the spray behaviour on top of it.
Sensible starting values and how to tune from them
Use these as a starting point, not a prescription. The goal is to get close, then let your own testing pull the numbers into place over a few sessions.
Once you have a baseline, spend real time with it before changing anything. Constant setting changes are the single biggest thing stopping players from improving, because your aim never gets a stable target to adapt to. Give a setup at least a week of honest play.

Why settings only get you to the start line
A clean, consistent setup removes excuses, but it does not aim for you. Since Rust moved away from fixed deterministic spray patterns in June 2022, recoil is a simplified base pattern plus per-shot horizontal and vertical randomisation and an aim cone, all shaped by context: crouching and aiming tighten it, running and hipfiring widen it. That means control comes from stable inputs plus trained compensation, not from memorising an old fixed AK pattern.
